Translation in English: “O, the great deity Saraswati, the lotus-eyed epitome of knowledge… O, big-eyed Goddess, omnipresent in the universe, bless me with wisdom and knowledge that exists in the world.”

1. Basant Panchami :

It celebrates the onset of spring and harvest after the cold and dreary winter months.

This year the festival would be celebrated on 29 th January 2020.

Basant Panchami is also called as ‘Saraswati Puja’ in many communities.

People who are involved in music also seek the blessings of the Goddess, as the Veena holding the Goddess also happens to be the goddess of music and art.


On this special auspicious day, a lot of traditional delicacies are also prepared and savored by many people.

Most of the dishes are in the yellow hue signifying the color of Vasant Panchami.

4. Basant Panchami 2020 Celebration:

As per a popular belief,  the Goddess Saraswati, who is said to be the deity of knowledge, music, arts, science, and technology, was born on this day.

Hence people are often seen celebrating Saraswati Puja on Basant Panchami.

Another popular legend is that the day is celebrated to honor the legendary poet great Kalidasa.

Usually, people celebrate by keeping a fast on the whole day.


The term the  Vasant Panchami or Basant Panchami has no relation with Vasant Ritu.

Bengalis choose this auspicious day to introduce their toddlers to reading and writing on this day special for students.

Little children are made to write their first letters on a slate with adult supervision in front of the idol of the Goddess Saraswati.

 

Many schools organize cultural events to celebrate the festival in the evening.

Some communities also do Pitr-arpan as a mark of their  respect and to call for peace for departed souls.

The God of love, Kamadeva is also worshipped on this  auspicious day.

The color yellow is symbolic of the vibrancy of spring After braving through the harsh winters.

Traditionally children were taught to write their first word on this special day. It is considered a blessed beginning of learning with the Goddess of Knowledge and Wisdom.

The scintillating yellow color holds great importance on this auspicious day.

The color of Basant (Spring) is yellow, also known as the ‘Basanti’ color in Bengali.

It symbolizes prosperity, light, energy, and optimism and also knowledge.

This is the main reason why people wear yellow clothes only and then make traditional delicacies in yellow hues.

According to folklore and snakes are fed with milk on Basant Panchami to bring wealth and prosperity in the coming days.


5. Basant Panchami 2020 Sweets:

Indian festivals are incomplete without traditional sweets and Some popular sweets which are relished during Basant Panchami are:

From Bengal -the land of Mishti:

Here Goddess Saraswati is offered- BUNDI KI LADDU, KHIR, NARIALKUL.

From Bihar – the land of festivals:

Here the Goddess Saraswati is offered with a different- buddy, nariyal.

From Punjab- the land of five rivers:

Like other states, Basant Panchami is celebrated with great enthusiasm in PUNJAB. Traditionally -MITHI CHAWAL.


6. Basant Panchami Significance:

This festival is also considered very auspicious as it meant to usher in the life of a child.

Traditionally children were taught to write their first word on this day.

It is considered a blessed beginning of learning with the Goddess of Knowledge- worshiped as the presiding deity on this auspicious day.

Kite flying, the popular sport of India and is associated with the festival of Basant Panchami.


7. How to celebrate the festival of Basant Panchami with your children, make a plan:

    1. Tell your children about the significance of the festival in our life.
    2. Explain to them about the changes that occur in nature with the arrival of the spring (Basant) season.
    3. Ask them to wear yellow clothes to symbolize the significance of the color and also the festival.
    4. Involve them in the preparations for the puja of the Goddess Saraswati.
    5. Teach them Saraswati Vandana and ask them to chant the Mantra during the puja-Jai Ma Saraswati.

Ask them to offer prayer to the Goddess Saraswati, seek her blessings by placing the stationary items like pen, pencils, and notebooks at her feet.

Tell your children to use these special stationery items after the puja is over.

Nana-Ratna-Samayuktam, Karta-Swara-Vibhushitam

Asanam Deva-Deveshi! Prityartham Prati-Grihyatam

Shri Saraswati-Devyai Asnarthe Pancha-Pushpani Samarpayami

मन्त्रअर्थ – हे देवताओं की ईश्वरी! विविध प्रकार के रत्नों से युक्त स्वर्ण-सज्जित आसन को प्रसन्नता हेतु ग्रहण करें।

॥भगवती सरस्वती के आसन के लिए मैं पाँच पुष्प अर्पित करता हूँ॥

Pushpanjali-2 (पुष्पाञ्जलि)

After this perform Bhagwati Saraswati Puja with Chandan, Akshata, Pushpa, Dhoop, Deep and Naivedhya while chanting following Mantras-

Om Shri Saraswati-Devyai Namah Padayoh Padyam Samarpayami

Om Shri Saraswati-Devyai Namah Shirasi Arghyam Samarpayami

Om Shri Saraswati-Devyai Namah Gandhakshatam Samarpayami

Om Shri Saraswati-Devyai Namah Pushpam Samarpayami

Om Shri Saraswati-Devyai Namah Dhupam Ghrapayami

Om Shri Saraswati-Devyai Namah Dipam Darshayami

Om Shri Saraswati-Devyai Namah Naivedyam Samarpayami

Om Shri Saraswati-Devyai Namah Achamaniyam Samarpayami

Pushpanjali-3 (पुष्पाञ्जलि)

After doing Pujan as described above, take Gandha, Akshata, and Pushpa in left hand and leave them over or near Bahi-Khate with the right hand while chanting following Mantra-

Om Shri Saraswatyai Namah Anna Pujanena Shri Saraswati Devi Priyatam Namo Namah

मन्त्रअर्थ – श्रीसरस्वती को नमस्कार। इस पूजन से श्रीसरस्वती देवी प्रसन्न हों, उन्हें बारम्बार नमस्कार।

  1. If your children have not started going to school then instruct them to write an auspicious sign like Om or Swastika on a piece of paper and place it at the feet of the Goddess.
  2. Tell your children about the significance of the act of donation on this day and encourage them to distribute stationery items like pens, pencils, and notebooks to poor children or needy students.
  3. Involve your children for preparing saffron halwa and sweet saffron rice, which are offerings to the Goddess on this occasion.
  4. Enjoy the colorful festival and bright sunshine of spring with your children by flying kites with them and enjoy.

Celebrating Basant Panchami with your children and will help them to understand the significance of changes that occur in different seasons.

This will further help them to accept and welcome the changes in their life also.
